Prostate Cancer: Causes and Viable Treatment
The prostate is a smaller walnut-shaped gland in men that causes the production of the seminal fluid to transport and nourish sperm. As the name suggests, prostate cancer forms in the prostate, and it is one of the most common cancer types.
Here are the details of prostate
cancer treatment and causes.
Causes of Prostate
Cancer:
Leading doctors have concluded that this
cancer starts when the prostate cells have DNA changes. DNA has instructions
that direct a cell regarding what it should do. These changes enable the cells
to grow and divide rapidly.
Such abnormal cells keep living while the
normal ones die. In addition, the accumulation of abnormal cells leads to a
tumour that grows and invades nearby tissue. The abnormal cells start breaking
away and spreading to other body parts at times.
Prostate Cancer
Treatment:
Surgery:
It involves the removal of the prostate gland
itself, including some of the surrounding tissues and a couple of lymph nodes.
It helps treat the kind of cancer that is limited to the prostate.
Radiation therapy:
In the case of prostate cancer, radiation
therapy is also a viable option, involving:
1. External beam radiation (radiation from
outside the body)
2. Brachytherapy (radiation put inside the
body)
Radiation therapy utilizes
high-powered energy for killing cancer cells.
Heating or freezing prostate tissue:
The two options in this case are:
- Freezing
        the tissues: Cryotherapy
or Cryoablation for prostate cancer uses a cold gas to
freeze the prostate tissue. The process repeats after the tissue thaws.
The cycle of freezing-thawing kills cancer cells.
 - Heating
        the tissues: High-intensity
focused ultrasound treatment utilizes concentrated ultrasound energy
for heating cancer-affected tissue and terminating it.
