An Overview of Thyroid Cancer & its Treatment Procedure

Thyroid cancer grows in the cells of the thyroid, a butterfly-shaped gland found at the base of the neck, right below the Adam's apple. This gland produces hormones to regulate your weight, body temperature, blood pressure, and heart rate. Thyroid cancer may not show any symptoms initially. But it leads to swelling and pain in the neck as it grows.

There are different types of thyroid cancer. Some of them grow slowly, while others are aggressive. In most cases, thyroid cancer treatment can cure the disease.

Different treatment options for thyroid cancer

Treatment options depend on the stage and type of thyroid cancer, your preferences, and overall health.

Surgery

Surgical removal of the thyroid is one way to treat thyroid cancer. The doctor might recommend one of these three surgical options, depending on the size of cancer and how far it has spread. So, depending on the results of the ultrasound, your doctor will suggest:

●      Thyroidectomy (Remove most or all of your thyroid)

●      Thyroid lobectomy (Remove a portion of your thyroid)

●      Lymph node dissection (Remove lymph nodes present in the neck)

Thyroid hormone therapy

Doctors might suggest thyroid hormone medication for life after thyroidectomy. 

This medicine helps in two ways:

●      It offers the missing hormone the thyroid normally produces

●      It suppresses the TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) production from the pituitary gland.

Chemotherapy for thyroid cancer treatment

Chemotherapy is the drug treatment where chemicals kill cancer cells. It is not a common treatment for thyroid cancer, though it is recommended at times for those with anaplastic thyroid cancer. Chemotherapy is combined with radiation therapy for better results.
